Touch App: Teacher Notifications

Approved teachers and staff can easily, quickly and safely connect with students and parents with the simplicity and efficiency of text messages and the security of one-way messaging. Teacher notifications are a great way for teachers to communicate homework, project or test reminders, plan changes and more all with proper administrative oversight and reporting capabilities to keep your students and staff
safe in today’s connected world.

Create a Teacher Account

Before teachers/staff are able to utilize teacher notifications, and app admin will need to give the teacher access to the App Dashboard. Navigate to the Accounts: Dashboard to create new accounts for teachers.

In the Dashboard Accounts screen, select the "+New" button above the user list to create a new account for an existing contact (user from the Users Database).

Select the invitation settings and account type.

  1. Invitation setting: Send now, Schedule for Later, Set Password(s), or No Invite
  2. Account Type: Select Teachers to grant the user access to My News and related new reports

Select Create Accounts to create the new contact/user account.

You will see the message "Congratulations! These accounts have been setup and invites have been sent. Make sure to instruct your new Administrator(s) and/or Teacher(s) to check their email for instructions and a link for logging in the first time. "

Click Ok to return to the Dashboard Accounts screen.

Manage Teacher's "My News" Categories

App admins can view and manage categories for any teacher accounts.

In People: Contacts, select to edit the desired teacher/staff.

In the Edit Contact page, select the Newsfeed Categories tab. In the Newsfeeds Categories tab for the user you can;

  1. Create new categories
  2. Edit existing categories. This includes updating the icon and category name.
  3. View subscribers. This will show a list of users who have logged in to the app and subscribed to the category.
  4. Delete an existing category. 
    Note that if a category is deleted this will also delete all news items in the category.

Teacher Access

Teachers/Staff will have limited access to items in the App Dashboard. They will be able to access, News, Market, Reports, and Hall Passes.

News

In the News, teachers/staff will be able to create news items, view their news, and manage their categories. Before teachers are able to create new items, they will first need to set up their categories. In this example, the teacher set up a category for each class they teach as well as any sports or activities they coach or advise.

To access My Categories, go to News > Settings > Categories.

On the My Categories screen, teachers can;

  1. Create new categories
  2. Edit existing categories. This includes updating the icon and category name.
  3. View subscribers. This will show a list of users who have logged in to the app and subscribed to the category.
  4. Delete an existing category. 
    Note that if a category is deleted this will also delete all news items in the category.
Add/Edit Category

Select "+New" to create a new category.

  1. Select an image from the library or upload your own image. This image will appear next to each news item that is created in the category.
  2. Add a category name. This name will appear under "My Alerts" where users can select to subscribe to the category and on each news item in the category.

Select Ok to create the new category.

Create News Item

After the categories have been created, teachers will then be able to create a news items in any of their categories.

  1. Add a title to your message.
  2. Add content to your message.
  3. Select to open links in a browser and not the app.
  4. Add any attachments

Select Continue.

Choose how the message should be sent. The teacher can choose if the item will only appear in the newsfeed or if it will also send as a push notification.

Choose which category or categories the message should be added to.

Preview the message and choose any optional settings.

Select Send to send/schedule the message.

After sending the message, you'll see a notification showing if the message was successfully sent for the selected channels.

Opt-In for Teacher Notifications

Before users will see teacher notifications, in My Alerts they will need to opt-in to each teacher and category they would like to see in the newsfeed.

The attached infographic shows the steps needed to turn on the notification. You can download the infographic with your banding colors by going to your App Dashboard > Marketing > Documents and selecting the Teacher Opt-In Infographic.
